A foreground figurative composition, with the Mother of God seated on a high podium in the centre, resting a book on her knee. The Madonna's legs and the podium are completely covered by wide draperies of clothing. Her head, covered with a hooded cloak, is turned to the right towards an older woman (Anna). Anna, dressed in a cloak with a hood, has placed her right hand on her daughter's shoulder and, clutching a staff in her left hand, is leaning forward and talking to her daughter. A small, naked boy (Jesus) is pressed against his mother's chest on the left, and she is holding him from behind. Young John the Baptist is leaning against the Madonna's knees on the right. At the top left is a profile image of an older man (Joachim) wearing a headdress reminiscent of a medieval Flemish chaperon. The manner of execution – the representation of a New Testament scene in the context of genre art – allows the work to be attributed to the heritage of the Northern Renaissance masters.
