Object description
The crucifixion is carved in the traditions of Ukrainian sacred sculpture of the Baroque period. The figure of Jesus is depicted at the moment of death on the cross. His body is slightly bent in a characteristic S-shaped line. His head is turned to the side and tilted towards his right shoulder. His eyes are closed, his mouth is slightly open, and his face conveys an expression of submission and humility. Christ's arms are spread wide, but not in a strict horizontal line; instead, they are at a certain angle, which enhances the dramatic effect. The plasticity of the body is distinguished by a somewhat generalised but eloquent reproduction of the anatomical features of the human body. The tense muscles of the arms and legs, clearly defined ribs, and thinness emphasise the idea of physical torment. At the same time, the posture and facial expression reveal a spiritual exaltation that has transformed death into a symbol of victory over sin. The perizoma, modelled with deep, clear folds, gives the work a certain emotional colouring that balances the composition. The sculptural image of the Crucified Christ combines realistic modelling with Baroque emotional expression, which corresponds to the general trend in sacred art of the time, where the main task was to evoke emotions of empathy.
