The popularity of Jacopo Bassano's works among collectors in the late 16th and 17th centuries contributed to the creation of numerous copies, many of which were of high artistic quality. The Lviv copy, which almost exactly replicates the original, was executed in 1558 for the Testa di San Giovanni altar in the church of San Francesco in Bassano. The composition was unusual for Jacopo Bassano and was strongly influenced by Paolo Veronese. This can be noticed in John the Baptist's figure positioning and the landscape behind him. The copy demonstrates the author's outstanding competence but lacks the original's colour and expressiveness.
