Object description
Figures of saints who were considered patrons were widespread in Ukraine. A small-sized polychrome work depicts a static full-length figure of the Catholic saint Florian. He is shown as a young man with a gentle smile on his pleasant face. Florian is the patron saint of firefighters, blacksmiths, glassmakers, bakers, and potters. He is often portrayed as a Roman soldier with a bucket or jug of water. In this artwork, the armour, helmet, and clothing are schematically rendered with low relief. The saint's squat figure, with his legs slightly bent at the knees, is modelled anatomically generalised. The sculptural image embodies stillness and calm. The work has suffered significant losses, making it challenging to fully comprehend the author's idea.
