Object description
The full-length figure of a Dominican monk is depicted in an S-shaped silhouette; his right leg is bent. In a modest manner, the sculptor accurately reproduced the anatomical similarity and conveyed the man's form, mood, and emotions. The monk seemed to freeze in a theatrical pose. The author focused on depicting the face with a high forehead, protruding cheekbones with sunken cheeks, a straight, well-defined nose and a massive chin framed with a small, incised beard. The religious habit is modelled in its upper part by minor recessed diagonal planes and by horizontal lines of modest draperies in the lower part. The sculpture's significantly charred nature complicates its original appearance's reproduction. However, the viewer can see a holistic and emotionally powerful image of a Dominican monk.
