Biography: Bonaventura Peeters the Elder (July 23, 1614 – July 25, 1652) was a South Dutch painter of marine landscapes and scenes. He was the brother of Jan Peeters the Elder, Gillis Peeters, and Catharina Peeters, who were also artists. Bonaventure was taught the art of painting by his father, a master in Antwerp and the Guild of Saint Luke member from 1607 to 1608. The author himself became a member of the Guild in 1634. In his early works, Bonaventura Peeters the Elder reproduced landscapes influenced by the Dutch School of Painting. He often depicted sunken ships in stormy seas. However, the artist also created more tranquil scenes of the river Scheldt and its coastline, displaying a sophisticated use of the palette. Subsequently, the author's works featured bright colours reminiscent of Italian Classicism tones. This change in style reflects the increasing international demand for Italian landscapes.

Object description

Landscape with a Tower is one of the author's paintings depicting the sea as calm. The ruins of a castle with a tower are recreated among the trees above the water. Four men are portrayed in front of the castle on the shore, one of whom is pounding hoops into the barrel. Behind him, under one arch of the castle, a young woman stands by the iron gate with a jug. Under another arch, a man tends to a fire. On the right side, a boat covered with a tarpaulin arrives at the shore with three men. Below is another small boat with several people, two of them in oriental clothing. The painting's gloomy sky and overall dark palette suggest the beginning of a storm. A similar drawing is preserved in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
