Object description
Among folk artists, sculptural compositions of small figures of saints near the crucifixion were common. Carved from a single piece of wood, the artworks figuratively interpreted canonical characters. In folk art, such figures were somewhat divested of sanctity and endowed with more realistic features. The frontal sculpture of Mary from the Bronytsia village is presented in a prayerful pose with her arms placed on her chest. The maphorion drapes over the saint's head with smooth lines and descends over the shoulders, covering her back and arms. The folds of the tunic, worked out in straight lines, hang down effortlessly, emphasising the sculpture's static nature.
