Object description
The image of the cherub symbolises a loving and wise spirit, which, according to Greek tradition, was represented as a head with two or more wings. The image had no corporeality; the head existed only as the seat of the soul, and the wings were an attribute of the spirit. The head of an angel with outstretched wings is turned towards the right shoulder. The facial features are rendered with naturalistic authenticity – a high open forehead, wide-open eyes, a snub nose, plump cheeks, a protruding upper lip, and a small, prominent chin. Playful, wavy curls wrap around the head. The soft contours create a harmonious image of the cherub.
