Object description
The seven-pointed cross (the ends of the upper frame and one of the lower ones are missing) with an elongated central crosspiece is made using profiling and flat carving techniques. In the manner typical of primitive folk art, the Crucifixion is depicted on the front, occupying the central cross and part of the central shaft. The traditional compositional solution shows a full-length figure of Jesus against the background of a four-pointed cross, with his head tilted to his right shoulder and his palms open. The compositional solution of the scene includes a titlo-plate with the inscription "INRI", framed by the "kryvulka" (curved) motif. In the interpretation of the figure of Christ, there is a noticeable schematisation of forms, with marked outlines and insignificant elaboration of details. The central part of the back of the cross is occupied by an elongated figure of the Virgin Mary wearing a crown and holding the Christ Child in her arms. At the ends of the central crosspiece, on both the front and the back, are graphically elaborated, waist-length figures. The ends of the upper and lower obverse and reverse frames are separated from the central composition. Their horizontal planes are framed along the contour by a stripe, and the central parts of the frames are decorated with diagonal and straight vertical line patterns. The interpretation of the iconographic images indicates the authorship of a folk master.
