Object description
The painting depicts a woman with her gaze directed at the viewer. She is pouring milk into a jug for a man. Near the woman, baskets of apples and dishes with milk are depicted, along with a basket of grapes, cherries, and cabbage. The depiction of fruits and vegetables can be interpreted through their symbolism: the apple is a symbol of earthly desires, as well as a symbol of youth and life; the grapes are a symbol of fertility, abundance, and vitality, as well as a symbol of spiritual life and rebirth. Milk is considered the food of the gods, an elixir of life, a symbol of rebirth and immortality, as well as kindness, care, and compassion. The artist was influenced by the Bambocciante group, which emerged around the Dutch master Pieter van Laer and produced works in a style typical of the Dutch. Their works are characterised by contrasting light, depictions of wealth and the diversity of nature's gifts, as well as genre and domestic scenes, and episodes of street life. The artist adapted his work to salon painting, creating a canvas that would please the viewer's eye.
