Object description
In the painting, set in a dim carpenter's workshop, small Jesus is depicted before a workbench. He wears a white shirt and a blue cloak over his right shoulder. Turned to the left, he gazes attentively at Saint Joseph, who stands on the other side of the workbench. Saint Joseph leans on a drawknife with his right hand, his left hand gesturing as if in conversation. He wears a grey garment and a yellow cloak draped over his left shoulder. To the right of the workbench, an angel stands with hands crossed over the chest. Above, through an open window, the sky with clouds is visible. Such paintings had pedagogical and educational purposes and were used as private devotional images. The theme of bringing up children in the images of Saint Joseph is relatively rare. Joseph accompanied Jesus on his growth path "in wisdom, age, and grace", as described in the Gospels. During the years when Jesus lived in Nazareth with his family, Saint Joseph taught him his trade. Helping Christ grow in wisdom and faith was a parental task, which Joseph diligently fulfilled, setting an example for many parents who reflected upon this theme.
