Object description
"The Rest on the Flight into Egypt" is one of the most common themes in Italian sacred painting. According to the biblical story, after the birth of Christ in Bethlehem, King Herod ordered to kill all the firstborn males, prompting Mary and Joseph to flee to a safe place in Egypt. The picture depicts the Holy Family resting in the boundless rocky deserts at night. Joseph raised his eyes to a cloud with three cherubs as the Virgin Mary swaddled the Baby Christ. The painting is stylistically associated with the Venetian school of the first half of the 18th century. It is characterised by a cold colour palette, which is especially noticeable in the Virgin Mary's clothes, as well as the use of chiaroscuro, typical of Venetian artists, and expressive strokes. This intimate work was most likely created for a private collector.
