Object description
Saint Dominic is a Catholic saint, preacher, and founder of the Dominican Order. The sculpture shows a full-length figure of the saint, dressed in a habit, with his arms theatrically extended to the right. The man's clothing covers his entire body, exposing only his hands and feet. The drapery of the garment is restrained, modelled in planes with dominant straight, long folds, worked in parallel indentations, and rendered in low relief. In the artwork, the author paid little attention to the volumetric plasticity of the face; however, with shallow relief, meticulously crafted hair is neatly arranged around the tonsure. The sculpture is characterized by restrained emotions and gestures. The saint's figure, in its compositional resolution with classical contrapposto, is notable for reserved movements and stiffness of the pose.
