Object description
Gaius Julius Caesar (100 BC – 44 BC) was an ancient Roman statesman, politician, military leader, and writer. He was one of the most prominent politicians and military commanders of the ancient world. He was a Roman consul, dictator, and the de facto founder of a new form of government in Rome – empire. The personality of Gaius Julius Caesar was popular during the Renaissance and in modern times. Among the sculptural figures of statesmen of Ancient Rome, Julius Caesar was most often depicted with a laurel wreath on his head, since during his lifetime, the ruler had the right to wear it without removing it as a symbol of glory and victory. The portrait shows a bust of a middle-aged man with classic facial features – a straight nose, deep-set eyes, a strong chin, and a high forehead touched by wrinkles. The man wears a laurel wreath on his head. A paludamentum (a military cloak) is fastened on his shoulders with two fibulae. In later times, the bust was fixed on a metal cylindrical pin and stuck into a wooden turned pedestal with a round base.
